Five Reasons Your Burger Belongs On A Kaiser Bun

Blog

You've put thought and effort into your hamburgers and toppings. Whether you bought the burgers or made them yourself and whether you're serving gourmet veggie burgers or the best Angus beef, the bread that goes with them shouldn't be an afterthought. Here are five reasons Kaiser buns are a good option.

1) They have a great texture

Kaiser buns, also known as kaiser rolls or Vienna rolls, are crusty on the outside with a kind of heavy fluffiness on the inside. As you sink your teeth into your burger, it's nice to have bread you can sink them into.

Granted, the "kaiser rolls" you buy off the supermarket shelf may not actually have a decent texture. It's worth a trip to your local bakery to get the real thing.

2) They're made for big, juicy sandwiches

Kaiser buns are usually larger in diameter than standard hamburger buns, which gives you ample room for bigger burgers and more toppings. The aforementioned texture also holds up better to juiciness and condiments than most other buns. They can absorb plenty of moisture without getting soggy and falling apart.

3) The way they are baked complements the burgers

Kaiser buns were invented in the 1700s by Austrian bakers who perfected a way of using sweet fermentation to make bread. This technique leaves the rolls with a slight sweetness that contrasts well with savory burgers and tangy or spicy toppings. At the same time, they're not so sweet or flavorful that they overwhelm or clash with the burger and everything on it.

4) They come in a lot of different varieties

You can find kaiser rolls that have their distinctively sculpted tops left entirely plain or topped with sesame, poppy, or sunflower seeds. They are also available in rye, whole wheat, or gluten-free variations. Pick up several kinds, and everyone in your family or on your guest list will be happy.

5) They look appealing, too

Looking at your dinner helps get you in the mood to enjoy it. Kaiser buns are made to appear regal, by either hand-folding them or stamping them on top so that they bake up resembling a crown. It just makes the burger look more interesting.

The patty, the toppings, and the bun all come together to make a great hamburger. Kaiser buns have the texture, flavor, and look to fill the bill.
